ThePhiladelphia Chamber Ensemble is a connecting point for the rich diversity of American music, reflecting the influences of Jazz, blues, classical, and other musical traditions. The ensemble has distinguished itself as much more than a jazz ensemble, fashoning a repertoire that ranges from Charley’s “Confirmation”to the original compositions of Johnny Richards and a host of other sophisticated originals. The key to the success of this musical endeavor lies in the versatility of the musicians in the group. All are gifted equally in both jazz and classical music, and are therefore considered rare commodities in the music profession. Because of thier unique abilities, a program of this nature is possible. Music is needed that appeals to both classical and jazz enthusiasts. Richard Amoroso enjoys crossing these musical boundaries only when the integrity of both idioms is maintained throughout the music.
Program notes from the latest Jazz/Classical fusion concert
Randy Chick, piano - Tony Salicandro, flute, alto sax - Mike Ianieri, drums - Kevin MacConnell, bass - R. Amoroso, cello
Neolore - This is a transcription, arrangement Mr. Amoroso did from Johnnie Richard’s ground breaking album, “Experiments in Sound”
Sweet Georgia Brown - is a jazz standard and pop tune written in 1925 by Ben Bernie. Played before the start of every Harlem Globetrotters’ game during the famous Magic Circle where star players take turns in a mesmerizing showcase of blazing ball handling prowess.
Andrew Lloyd Webber's Variations composed in 1977 for his brother, the cellist Julian Lloyd Webber. This is based on the theme from Paganini's "24th Caprice" and is used as the opening theme to The South Bank Show.
This is an arrangement I did for a Jazz fusion concert in 2002 with a flutist friend of mine at a suburban church close to Philly.
